Can Soups Be Considered Healthy Food?

There are different opinions about soups. Some love them, some hate them. Some think they are useful and good for digestion, some can’t see any health benefits in them. Like everything in this world, there are two sides to the coin.

Why Soups Are Good?

1. Hot soups are very good for cold weather - They boost the metabolism, are warm and easily digested, providing energy for the body and helping avoid its overcooling.

2. If the secretory function of the stomach doesn’t function properly, the consumption of soups can stimulate the secretion of gastric juice, providing better digestion of food.

3. By including soups into your diet, you can control the fluid balance. Most people don’t drink enough water throughout the day, and soups will help maintain better body hydration.

4. Soups can help you lose weight more effectively - they are quite satiating while having fewer ingredients. However, this can’t concern heavy and greasy meat soups stuffed with high-calorie products.

5. Soups are an option for people who cannot chew - those with missing teeth, freshly installed dental implants or with the other conditions that don’t allow consuming harder foods.

Why Soups Are Bad?

Soups have many undoubted advantages, but they also have some disadvantages:

1. If you have a gastrointestinal disease (ulcer, gastritis with high acidity), meat broths are not recommended because they boost the release of acid that you don’t need. However, light vegetarian soups can still be an option.

2. The liquid in soups dilutes the gastric juice, reducing its concentration and slowing down the digestion of food.

3. Doctors don’t recommend eating fatty, rich broths to people with high blood pressure or atherosclerosis, especially in the age after 60, because they are packed with cholesterol that is bad for the cardiovascular system.

4. If you cook a meat broth, harmful substances from the meat get into it. These are food supplements, steroid hormones, antibiotics and other growth boosters used while raising livestock. If the broth is cooked from bones, salts of heavy metals collected in the bones of the animal throughout its entire life also get into it.

5. Long-term processing with the help of the hight temperature destroys vitamins in products. A salad made of the same vegetables as the soup will be a much healthier option.

How to Cook Healthy Soups?

If you want your soup to be healthier, follow these cooking tips:

The best meat to use for cooking soup is chicken, turkey, veal, and rabbit. The broth from such meat is considered dietic, especially if the first broth is drained.

Before cooking, cut off the fat and veins, put it in a saucepan with cold water, and boil for at least 10 minutes. The most active harmful substances from the meat will get into the broth, and then it should be drained. Next, refill the meat with new water and boil it as usual.

In order for your soup to acquire not only a pleasant, appetizing flavor but also an extra portion of vitamins that are good for your body, add fresh greens to it after it is finally ready.

Bon appetit!
